We Built Clyde Because We Needed It
Yesterday, we shared a problem that kept us up at night: the AI coordination problem. The challenge of getting multiple AI agents to work together without stepping on each other's toes, losing context, or creating bottlenecks that defeat the entire purpose of having AI agents in the first place.
The response was immediate. Developers pinged us. Research teams reached out. People managing complex AI systems sent messages saying, "This is exactly what we're struggling with." And that validated something we've been quietly building for months.
This is the origin story of Project Clyde.
We Built It Because We Were Broken
Here's the uncomfortable truth: we didn't set out to build an agent management system. We stumbled into it because we were drowning.
About six months ago, our team was deep in the weeds. We were building automations for clients, experimenting with multi-agent workflows, and testing the limits of what Claude could do. And we kept hitting the same wall over and over.
A task would require three different agents. Each agent would need its own context. How do you share learnings between them? How do you prevent Agent A from duplicating work Agent B already completed? How do you route tasks intelligently without creating a fragile single point of failure? How do you give agents the ability to improve over time without them losing institutional memory when you update a prompt?
We tried existing solutions. Some were too rigid. Some locked you into their ecosystem. Some worked fine for toy problems but collapsed under realistic complexity. Some assumed you wanted a massive, monolithic "superintelligence" coordinating everything—which isn't how real teams work, and it's certainly not how real AI systems should work.
So we rolled up our sleeves and built what we needed: tools to treat agents as composable building blocks, a shared memory layer so agents could build on each other's work, a skills registry so agents could discover and share capabilities, intelligent task routing, failure handling that kept humans in control, and performance tracking so we could see what was working and what wasn't.
Then something interesting happened: other teams started asking to use it. Not the shiny marketing version. The actual system we'd built to solve our own problems.
The Philosophy: What We Built and What We Didn't
Before I walk you through Clyde's core design, I want to be clear about something: we were deliberate about what we didn't build.
We didn't build a monolithic superintelligence that you hand your entire problem to and hope it solves it. Those sound elegant in theory. In practice, they're fragile, hard to debug, impossible to see inside, and they break in ways that are expensive to fix.
We didn't build a locked ecosystem where your agents only work within our platform. That's the opposite of what the world needs. The future isn't one tool that does everything. It's many tools that work together. Your agents should be portable. They should run anywhere. You shouldn't be dependent on us.
We didn't build a closed network of pre-trained agents you can only customize through our UI. That would be convenient for us, but it wouldn't be honest about what you need. You need to write custom agents for your specific problems. You need to own that code.
What we built instead is infrastructure: simple, transparent, composable infrastructure that lets you build multi-agent systems the way you'd actually want to.
Three Core Design Principles
1. Agent Registry: Agents Are Building Blocks, Not Competitors
Treat AI agents like software components, not like entities competing for status.
Your agents should be discoverable. If Agent A completes a task and Agent B starts working on something related, Agent B should see what Agent A did and build on it. No duplication. No reinventing wheels.
This means an agent registry where each agent can register itself, declare its capabilities, and be discovered by other agents. It's not fancy machine learning. It's transparency. Agents saying, "Here's what I do. Here's what I've learned. If you need this, I've got you."
With this basic infrastructure, something powerful happens: agents start behaving like a team instead of isolated workers.
2. Skills and Memory: Context Is Everything
Here's what kills most multi-agent systems: context loss.
Agent A learns something. Agent B has no idea. So when Agent B faces a similar challenge, it starts from zero. You're paying for the same computation twice. You're getting worse results. And you're frustrated because you've got "intelligent" systems that don't actually learn from each other.
We built two things to solve this.
First, a skills layer. Skills are atomic capabilities that agents can learn, improve, and share. An agent doesn't just execute a task and disappear. It extracts what it learned, improves its skill, and that improvement is available to every agent in the system. Over time, your system gets smarter.
Second, a persistent memory layer. Agents have short-term context—the conversation they're having right now—and long-term memory: what they've learned about your business, your customers, your processes. This isn't magic. It's just persistence that lets learning survive across conversations and agent rotations.
3. Task Orchestration: Intelligence With Human Control
Clyde needs to figure out which agent should handle which task, intelligently, while keeping you in control.
This means smart routing based on agent capabilities and performance history. It means workflow chaining so one agent's output becomes another agent's input. It means failure handling that doesn't retry forever. It means performance tracking so you can see which agents are actually delivering value.
And it means guardrails. Humans should always be in control. You should see the routing decisions. You should override them when needed. You should understand why an agent was chosen and what the fallback plan is.
Why This Is Free
I want to be direct: Project Clyde is a free download, not a commercial product we're selling.
That's intentional.
This is infrastructure. Infrastructure belongs in the open. It's the foundation that other builders build on. If we tried to monetize it as a product, we'd have to close it down, lock you in, and make decisions based on business model instead of what's technically right.
The world doesn't need another platform. It needs infrastructure that lets developers build better platforms. We're betting that if we get out of the way and give you the tools, value creation happens in your applications, not ours.
Will we build commercial products on top of Clyde? Probably. But those solve specific business problems. Clyde just makes it possible to solve them well.
